BS3-USB-8x8 8-Inputs, 8-Outputs USB control board

The BS3-USB-8x8 8-Inputs and 8-Outputs USB control board is designed for use with any BrightSign media player with a USB interface port.

The BS3-USB-8x8 board allows up to 8 illuminated push-button switches with either 5V or 12/24V LEDs to be interfaced to and controlled by a BrightSign media player.

The BS3-USB-8x8 board allows up to 8 inputs and 8 outputs to be processed by the BrightSign player.  For instance, up to 8 LED-illuminated push-button switches, such as the PB02, can be connected to the board.  The BrightSign player can be programmed to respond to the switch inputs, play relevant media files and send relevant on/off codes to the board to turn each switch’s LED on and off.

Powerful 32-bit PIC processor.  On-board user diagnostic to test all inputs and outputs.

Works with current BrightSign player models: LS423, HD1023, XD1033, XT1143

Works with legacy BrightSign player models: LS422, LS322, HD1022, XD1032, XD1132, 4K1042, 4K1142.

The BS3-USB-8x8 board has a 32-position screw-terminal strip for quickly and conveniently attaching up to 8 illuminated push-button switches such as the PB02.

The LEDs in the push-button switches can be powered at 5V from the internal USB connection or from an external 5-12V power source.  This allows separate higher powered LEDs to be driven by the BS3-USB-8x8 board.

An on-board diagnostic mode enables the board to test all 8 inputs and outputs without disconnecting the board from the BrightSign player.

Connections

The BS3-USB-8x8 board has a USB Type B connector.  The BrightSign player connects to the board with an included USB Type A to Type B lead.  For use with the LS423 player, a USB Type C to Type B lead is included.  The lead provides +5V DC from the BrightSign player to the board and 2-way serial data communication between both devices.

A separate 2.1mm power jack connector is provided for connecting an external power source (5-24V @ 2A maximum) to drive higher powered LEDs, relays, etc.  A header link is provided on the PCB to connect 5VDC from the USB port to the LED drivers.  The link is to be removed when an external DC source is used to power the LED drivers.

Up to 8 LED-illuminated push-button switches connect to the BS3-USB-8x8 board via 8 x 4-way screw terminal blocks labelled CON1 to CON8.  The 4 connections of each block provide GND and N/O SW for the switch, and +V and LED for the LED.

Operation

Inputs:  Activation of inputs 1-8 (connect any input to 0V) sends out ASCII '1', '2', '3', '4', '5', '6', '7' or '8', with each character followed by a ‘CR’ (Carriage Return).

The board’s firmware allows for multiple inputs low at the same time.  i.e. If input 1 goes low ('1' is reported), then input 2 goes low (while input 1 is held low), then input 2 will be reported.  If any 'active' Input (switch) opens then closes, it will be reported as a new input. I.E. suppose input1 is closed and input2 is closed and opened multiple times.  A '2' will be sent with each successive switch closure.  This logic is for all inputs.  When all inputs are open, a '0' (zero) is reported.

Outputs:  At any time the BrightSign player sends a byte to the BS3-USB-8x8 board, then the lamps will light according to the bit-pattern of the byte.  i.e. Bit 0 of the byte, will turn on Output 1.

To set the Outputs send the byte that represents the bits of the output as follows:

Bit     Binary              Decimal

0       00000001b      1d              (Output 1 on)
1       00000010b      2d              (Output 2 on)
2       00000100b      4d              (Output 3 on)
3       00001000b      8d              (Output 4 on)
4       00010000b      16d            (Output 5 on)
5       00100000b      32d            (Output 6 on)
6       01000000b      64d            (Output 7 on)
7       10000000b      128d          (Output 8 on)

         11111111b      255d           (All Outputs on)
         00000000b       0d            (All Outputs off)

LEDs  2 on-board LEDs indicate USB power on and processor running.

Diagnostic  When set to Diagnostic mode by toggling the S1 button switch the BS3-USB-8x8 board will run a series of tests to exercise the 8 inputs and 8 outputs.

1. Turn on all 8 outputs, wait 2 seconds, then turn off all 8 outputs.

2. Press any push-button input switch will turn on the switch’s LED.  Release the button and the LED turns off.

When in Diagnostic mode the board does not send, or is able to receive, any data on its USB port.
